About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant Lakeview area of New Orleans, The Velvet Cactus offers an authentic Mexican dining experience that skillfully blends bold flavors with a welcoming atmosphere. Located at 6300 Argonne Blvd, this lively restaurant, bar, and grill is a must-visit for anyone craving a rich and satisfying taste of Mexico’s diverse culinary landscape.

The Velvet Cactus truly shines with its diverse menu, where each dish is thoughtfully prepared to excite your palate. Start your meal with their freshly made Chips and Salsa, featuring a uniquely charred salsa that provides a smoky twist you won’t find elsewhere. Guests rave about the generosity and warmth of their chips, a perfect crunchy foundation for dipping.

For the main course, tantalize your taste buds with standout dishes such as the MAYAN Pork Pibil Quesadilla, which combines tender, slow-cooked pork with jalapeño, Pepper Jack cheese, and grilled pineapple relish, balanced by a smoky BBQ dipping sauce. The Baja Filet Mignon Quesadilla offers a luxurious mix of fire-roasted corn, black bean salsa, and melted Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, delivering a rich and indulgent bite. Seafood lovers will appreciate the fresh Grilled Gulf Shrimp Quesadilla paired with applewood bacon, adding a subtle smoky depth.

The restaurant’s Protein Bowls provide a vibrant, health-conscious option — the Fiesta Protein Bowl layers stewed black beans over Mexican yellow rice, topped with melted cheeses, pico de gallo, and your choice of Ranchero or Jalapeño Cream sauce, creating a comforting yet zesty meal that leaves you feeling nourished and satisfied.

Don’t miss the Enchiladas selection, served with two sides or a comforting cup of chicken tortilla soup. The smoked brisket enchiladas draped in Jalapeño Cream Sauce are a popular favorite, offering a wonderfully smoky and creamy bite. The combination plate lets you customize your feast with any three enchiladas and sauces, perfect for those who love variety.

The bar menu complements the flavorful food perfectly, boasting top-shelf margaritas and inventive cocktails crafted with care. Guests have praised the bartenders' flexibility and skill, happily accommodating off-menu drink requests with effortless flair.

Beyond the food, the atmosphere at The Velvet Cactus is both casual and inviting, making it ideal for anything from a laid-back dinner to a lively night out. The staff is consistently friendly and attentive, ensuring you feel truly welcome. While seating near the garage doors during colder weather might be brisk, the option to dine outdoors on warmer days offers a charming setting to soak up the New Orleans vibe.

Real diners’ voices echo the restaurant’s appeal: “Really good street tacos,” a customer shares, admiring the distinctive, fresh tamales and attentive service. Another applauds the “bomb” fish tacos, especially the corn tortilla versions both fried and grilled, while acknowledging that some dishes, like the Mexican pizza, didn’t hit the mark for them. Warm chips, flavorful salsas, and excellent drinks consistently receive high praise, underscoring the care and passion behind every detail at The Velvet Cactus.

In every bite, whether indulging in their rich shrimp and chorizo cheesecake appetizer or enjoying the hearty comfort of chicken fajitas, you can sense the thoughtful craftsmanship invested by the chefs. The Velvet Cactus is more than just a meal; it’s an experience that beautifully captures the festive spirit and bold tastes of Mexican cuisine, set against the distinctive backdrop of New Orleans hospitality.

The Velvet Cactus on Harrison Avenue is a must-visit if you’re in the Lakeview area. I had the street tacos. Really good. The tamales were equally good and tasty! Queso and chips were fresh and the charred salsa was unique, as I’ve never had salsa prepared that way. The service was great! Everyone from the hosts to waitstaff were very friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The atmosphere is cozy and energetic, with colorful decor and a relaxed vibe that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy. I highly recommend The Velvet Cactus for casual dinner or meeting friends for drinks and small plates.

Good hospitality, diego’s fish tacos with corn tortilla were bomb. Tried both version fried and grilled. Don’t get the Mexican pizza, it’s not pleasant.

Nice place for a casual meal. Good Tacos, Guac & Mexican style offerings. Abundant salsa & chips with great salsa. Chips were warm and flavorful. We both has Fish Tacos & sides. Tacos were excellent. had refried beans and brussel sprouts as sides - both very good. Weather was cold last night, we were seated by the closed garage doors & we were very cold. Go on a warmer day & sit outside or away from the doors.

Food, service, and staff were all excellent. Sad they did away with the warmed salsa. So much so, I asked our waitress just to heat me up some in the microwave, and she kindly obliged. Our adult beverages were great. Even after requesting something not on their drink menu, the bar staff pulled it off effortlessly. We'll definitely continue to fancy the Velvet Cactus. Maybe one day, they'll turn the pot warmers back on.

It’s really late on this review from last week so sorry I can remember the waiters name. My partner and I wanted to try the tortilla soup and the protein bowl. Felt like the the soup tasted more abit like chili with the seasoning, my partner didn’t like the plantains even though she really loves them in general (I honestly thought they were pretty drier than sweeter taste, the side of beans with queso was fantastic, the the bowl the rice was okay and the filet steak was abit chewy for my palette. Over all the presentation was great and the place has a phenomenal vibe. I’m gonna have to come back and give the steak another try I saw their steak fajitas after I had already put in my order. And our waiter was amazing he was friendly and open and enthusiastic. Helped me decided with the creamy jalapeño sauce and the other habanero sauce. I remember commenting about his bottled earrings. I highly recommend the margaritas. I had the Mango marg with salt and the strawberry marg with sugar.
